Depuis lors, ses films n’ont connu qu’une diffusion confidentielle et une reconnaissance limitée. Boris Lehman introduisait l’ouvrage par un texte d’une justesse jusqu’aujourd’hui inégalée en hommage à son ami trop tôt disparu. Son titre est éloquent : « Est grand celui qui sait se faire petit ». Il définissait l’œuvre de Patrick Van Antwerpen d’une manière qui vaut encore aujourd’hui : « Oscillant entre le reportage et la fiction, le film de commande et le film d’auteur, il a su mettre en évidence certains de nos comportements les plus quotidiens, les plus révélateurs, en composant une œuvre originale, par petites touches truculentes, incisives et caustiques. Ses films sont tantôt des pochades et tantôt des poèmes, drôles et pathétiques, parfois loufoques ou satiriques, toujours tendres et pudiques.
